Modern Chic Magazine’s Three-Part Expose

A fairly even-handed view of lip balm addiction has just been published by Modern Chic Magazine. Author Gabrielle Blue sums it up this way:

No company wants to be the first to admit their product is in any way harmful or addictive, and for all we know the lip balm industry is innocent. But as lip balm addicts continue to grow in numbers, develop support groups on Facebook and unite to kick the habit on sites such as Lip Balm Anonymous, it’s getting harder to believe there’s no truth to their claims.

modernchicBlue also got some plum quotes, including one from Carma Labs, makers of Carmex. “We are addictive,” says Mike Pietsch, vice-president of sales at Carma Labs.  “We’re addictively good.”  Talk about playing up the addictive legend for fun and profit!   Meanwhile, Paula Begoun , author of “The Original Beauty Bible” says of “medicated” balms such as Carmex, “‘Medicated,’ however, is at best a dubious term.”

HA HA HA, the twelve step program? At first I thought this was funny, but then I realized the makers of this site were serious. WOW. If you’re addicted to chapstick just google search ways to break it, or home remedies to heal your lips. May God be with all of you, I pray you don’t succum to your sinful ways and break away from chapstick for good….hahaha give me a break. Dumb asses.

Thanks for keeping things sophisticated, Kim.

I’m 34 years old and I have not left the house without a lip balm in my pocket since I was 12. I really thought I was the only person who was addicted to lip balm until about 20 minutes ago when I found this website. It’s good to know I’m not a freak - it is a real ‘thing’!
To be honest, though, I have no desire to stop using lip balm. It’s a bit annoying, always having to remember to take lip balm and have a pocket or a bag to put it in, but I’m used to it. It’s not one of the serious problems in my life. The discomfort I feel when my lips get dry is way too awful to even consider giving it up by any method.
I do stick to natural and organic products - I’ve never had a blistex or a chapstick or any of the brands they usually sell in chemists, and I stay away from the petroleum bases. I mean to get around to making my own one day… it’s on the list of all those good things I mean to do one day.

I havr found the best lip balm ever!! It’s called Island Kisses. The site is . It’s made by a airline stewardess. My lips stayed moisturized for 6 hours staight. Everyone should try it and it’s natural. LOVE!

I have not used “medicated or flavored” lip balms. I have only used the non waxy types, but realized a few months ago that no matter how good, expensive, etc, I only had “momentary relief” when applied. I thought perhaps I was having an allergic reaction to these products. I went online and purchased a “bees wax free” product called Zi Zai. It is a Vegan product and did seem to relieve the symptoms i had at first. A month later and I am back to the same situation of dry, irritated lips within minutes of applying products. I am convinced now that it is an addiction that I have. Thank you for having this site and letting me know that I am not alone. I am going to throw everything away now.
